Marisa Berglund, BA, LMP, owner of Elemental Massage Therapy

I have been a massage therapist since 2002. I received my training from Ashmead school of massage.

I also took a further course in Aromatherapy and Spa training. While in massage school I volunteered my time at Children’s Hospital doing chair massage on hospital staff and parents of children who were patients at the hospital. I also did an internship at Steven’s Hospital in Edmonds where I massaged patients and staff of the hospital. I am a provider for most major medical insurance as well as auto insurance and Labor and Industries. Massage therapy is truly my passion and I can’t imagine having any other career. Whether I am providing treatment to someone with an injury or helping someone to relax after a long days work, I am always rewarded by the fact that I can make a difference in others’ lives. In addition to being trained to do swedish, deep tissue and injury treatment massage, I am also trained in the art of Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage and Ashi-Thai. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my husband Adam and my sons Tenzin and Makaio.

KRISTEN MINKE, BS, LMP

When a career ending injury required a change of course I pursued both my B.S. in Nutrition and Exercise Science at Bastyr University. While at Bastyr I took an advanced standing intensive in treatment massage through Brenneke School of Massage. I later took a course to gain the Washington State Intraoral massage endorsement for my license in order to treat TMJ disorders.

I have done two internships at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center under chief investigator Dr. Ann McTiernan studying the effects of exercise and nutrition on cancer survivors and I use what I have learned about nutrition and exercise to enhance my massage treatments. I volunteered in the outpatient physical therapy department at Evergreen Hospital for 8 months and at Renown in-patient geriatric rehabilitation hospital in Reno, NV for three months. I have worked at most of the top massage clinics in the area and learned a great deal from all the gifted therapists that I was blessed to have worked with.

I have worked with massage clients as young as 7 and adults into their 90s. I find everyone can benefit from the healing properties of massage and of all my experiences my clients have been my best teachers. Because of my more courageous and communicative clients I was able to design an effective massage protocol for frozen shoulder and alleviate the symptoms of Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) in others. I have worked with a variety of other physical ailments most commonly arthritis, fibromyalgia and migraines among others.

My massage style has a significant range from the light rhythmic repetitions of Manual Lymph Drainage to the moderate flowing sequences of Swedish massage to the subtle depth of Schweitzer Deep Tissue Technique. All are effective especially when applied appropriately to the current phase of injury. My training at Bastyr included a cooperative intermodality approach to patient care and I welcome input from other practitioners with greater scope of practice.

My clients typically are satisfied with their massage experience and even if injury treatment necessitates a degree of discomfort most are able to relax enough to have a restful and restorative experience. I continue to learn more about the body and massage treatment approaches so I can better serve my clients.

Anita Marie

Anita relocated to the PNW in May of 2015, all the way from Atlanta, Georgia. After spending her whole life in the Southeast, she decided it was time to undertake a new and exciting adventure, and she hasn’t been disappointed!

Anita has been a Licensed Massage Therapist for 10 years, graduating from Atlanta School of Massage with a 4.0 GPA, where she received certifications in deep tissue, Swedish, reflexology, spa treatments and chair massage. She spent the first 6 years of her career working full-time for chiropractors, where she honed her skills working with sports and auto injury patients, and people from all walks of life from ages 8 to 88! During this time, she added other modalities to her tool kit, including bamboo massage, massage cupping, prenatal and perinatal massage, TMJ therapy, PNF stretching and Advanced Deep Tissue techniques. In the last 4 years, Anita decided to branch out into the spa industry, to broaden her experience and expertise. She has worked with several 4 and 5 star hotel spas such as Spa Waverly™ at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel, as well as Bliss Spa™ at the “W” Hotel in Midtown Atlanta. Here, Anita learned additional spa treatments such as Parafango treatments, salt scrubs, sea mud wraps, ginger wraps and more. Anita is excited to begin learning Ashiatsu, or “barefoot massage”, to add to her list of treatment options. Ashiatsu is described as deep, deep tissue with a mesmerizing Swedish element.

Anita describes her massage technique as a “relaxing” deep tissue. Most of her clients find themselves asleep on the table within minutes, which allows the muscles to relax and “open up”, providing the ability to go deeper into the tissues without causing the discomfort associated with going in too deep too quickly, which causes the muscles to tighten up and then resist the therapists treatment. “If you can relax the client first, the muscles will open up and allow the work to be done, without the discomfort many people associate with deep tissue. After the massage, the client is in a state of complete relaxation, with the benefits of having deeper issues treated and resolved!”

Anita is enjoying her time getting to know the PNW, and spends her days off exploring, hiking, playing racquetball, kayaking, photography and whale watching. She loves being near the water, and is excited to be a part of the team at Elemental Massage!
